Mounjaro® is a once-weekly weight loss injection containing the active ingredient tirzepatide. It works by reducing your appetite and making you feel fuller for longer, helping you lose weight when combined with a diet and exercise plan.
How does it work? Mounjaro is the first and only medicine that activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. It is a single molecule designed to bind to both glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) pathways to help regulate blood sugar and reduce appetite.

Who should not use Mounjaro? Do not use Mounjaro if you or any family member have ever had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). It is not for people with Type 1 Diabetes or for children under 18. Avoid Mounjaro if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients.
Injection: You should use Mounjaro once a week, on the same day and at any time of day. It comes in a pre-filled, single-dose pen, so there is no need to handle the needle or mix the medication. The injection is given under the skin (subcutaneously) in your abdomen, thigh, or the back of your upper arm. It's important to rotate your injection site each week to prevent irritation.
Storage: Keep Mounjaro pens in the refrigerator (2°C to 8°C) and away from light. Do not freeze them. If needed, a pen can be stored at room temperature (up to 30°C) for up to 21 days.

The treatment starts with a low dose that is gradually increased to allow your body to adjust and to minimize side effects. You will typically stay on each dose for 4 weeks before increasing.
The six available doses are: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg, and 15mg.
The starting dose is always 2.5mg. You may stay on a lower dose for longer if you are experiencing side effects or are satisfied with your weight loss results on a 5mg or 10mg maintenance dose. The maximum dose is 15mg per week.
Missed Dose: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, as long as it's within 4 days (96 hours) of the missed dose. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next one on your regularly scheduled day.
Changing Day: You can change your weekly injection day as long as there are at least 3 days (72 hours) between your doses.
Common Side Effects: The most common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, and stomach pain. These generally decrease over time.

If you take oral birth control pills, they may not work as effectively while using Mounjaro. Your healthcare provider may recommend another type of birth control for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
